History of the club
The club was formed
by John Lewis and sixteen passionate football lovers mainly from
the well-educated class of the mill-town in the year 1868.
The club had no own playing ground and hence does not have any
gate revenue. The income came from members' subscriptions. These
members were wealthy and well-connected, and this helped the club
survive and rise beyond the large number of other local teams
around at the time. John Lewis
was the treasurer of the club.
Blackburn Rovers played their first game on 11th December 1875.
Our first ground was a rented farmland at Oozehead, followed by
renting Alexandra Meadows belonging to the East Lancashire Cricket
Club. Eventually in 1882, Ewood
Park was built which remains today as the oldest home to a
Premier League club. |

Did you know about the Club Crest on our Corner Flags?
As
the only football club to have won the English F.A. Cup 3 times
in 3 consecutive seasons, and for this achievement Blackburn Rovers
is the only club in the English Football League with permission
to display their club crest on the four corner flags.
Rumours are that back in the year 1885, the
Football Association could not afford the FA Cup Trophy for Blackburn Rovers. Hence the club was granted the unique permission to to display the club crest on the corner flags on match days. This rumour is denied by the Football Association. |
